What is Titanium Grade 5 / Material 3.7165?
Titanium Grade 5 belongs to the titanium material group and is characterized - like all titanium alloys - by excellent corrosion resistance, low density and high strength. The main alloying elements for Titanium Grade 5 are vanadium and aluminum.
This modern material is ideal for demanding applications in industry and aerospace. This material is also frequently used in medical technology.
What is Titanium Grade 5 used for?
Due to its specific properties, titanium grade 5 with the material number 3.7165 is typically used for parts, components and accessories in various industries.
In particular, these include components for aircraft, components for ultrasonic technology, components for engine technology and components for motor sports. As a general rule, titanium grade 5 is mainly used in applications where weight reduction plays an important role.
Outstanding mechanical properties and low specific weight
Compared to titanium, titanium grade 5 has several key advantages: It can be age-hardened and has very good mechanical properties. Its low specific weight and excellent mechanical load-bearing capacity make it the ideal material for demanding applications in the industries mentioned.
The maximum temperature when using Titanium Grade 5, which is surrounded by an oxide layer, is around 400°.

Notes on welding and machining of titanium grade 5
Titanium Grade 5 can be welded as well as machined without any problems. When welding, a wide variety of processes such as MIG, TIG, plasma welding, laser welding and electron beam welding are generally possible.
Special care must be taken to ensure complete inert gas protection during the welding process.
When machining titanium grade 5, care must be taken to ensure that the material is machined in the annealed condition wherever possible. Compared with the machining of stainless steels, work should be carried out at a lower cutting speed. Also important: Sufficient cooling should be provided during machining.
